Her social world, Gypsy basically was allowed to have no friends and there was no school, as we've talked about, past the second grade and no job, no mail she could even open herself.
And the phone was monitored and the internet, when it existed at the house at all, was completely supervised.
So the world outside was just sealed off from Gypsy.
And I think a question a lot of people ask about this case is like, how didn't Gypsy know?
And I feel like the answer is pretty simple in that she was just brainwashed, but also that she obviously knew at some point, and that's exactly what made the rest so effective.
because Gypsy knew she could walk because she did it inside the house when no one else was watching.
And she knew she could eat solid food, but the leukemia and the chromosomal disorder, she had no way to test those against reality.
So she knew she could do some things, but she didn't know she wasn't sick.
So she's probably just like, oh, mom knows best, you know?
And you're just a kid.
Yeah, you don't know any better.
And years later in her ebook released, Gypsy described her role in her mother's production in the language of show business.
The press interviews, the charity events, Dee Dee did the talking while Gypsy waited, just numb, just waiting for a cue.
Like a stage mother, Dee Dee fed her daughter lines.
Like, it's a dream come true, and my mom is my best friend.
And through that script, Gypsy wrote, her mother could finally taste the fame she'd always wanted.
Because whatever movie was playing in Dee Dee's mind, Gypsy was never the star of it.
As we know, she was just the prop.
So in August of 2005, Hurricane Katrina tore into the Gulf Coast and over a thousand people died and hundreds of thousands more lost everything.
It was one of the worst disasters in American history, but for Dee Dee Blanchard, it was an opportunity.
