No one looks at a little girl in a wheelchair with a bare scalp and asks questions.
So on top of the physical abuse, the medications and the surgeries,
and, you know, even shaving her head and everything, that obviously has a major impact on a child.
But I mean, the psychological impact, I can't even imagine.
At least you can get yourself back into good health after that.
But psychologically, that has to mess you up so bad because the mind is slower to heal from a lifetime of being told by the
the person you love most, the person the world calls a saint at this point, that you are not what you actually are.
Starting with the most basic fact a person can know about themselves, and that is how old they are.
Because Gypsy didn't know.
Because Dee Dee kept falsified birth certificates, just documents shaving years off her daughter's real age.
And as Gypsy grew, the number Dee Dee told the world simply stopped keeping pace with reality, which is crazy.
And the number, she told Gypsy, wasn't much better because since she's been force feeding her daughter medications after medications and not eating properly, eating out of a feeding tube that was surgically placed into her stomach, she was a pretty frail little girl.
So it made it more believable that she was younger than what she actually was.
And not to mention, Dee Dee also said that Gypsy just had the mind of a seven-year-old.
And that single lie explains the childlike voice Gypsy was encouraged to use.
And it kind of excused her from every adult conversation.
And most importantly, it meant no one ever needed to ask Gypsy anything, because her mother would do the talking.
So at doctor's appointments, Dee Dee sat beside her daughter and held her hand.
And to everyone in the room, it looked like comfort, but Gypsy would later describe what it actually was, and that was just a signal, like a squeeze of the hand meant to stay quiet, shut up, and that I'll answer.
