So Dee Dee could play the devoted mother in public, but conventions are also full of people, and people talk to each other who would have thunk.
In February of 2011, at a convention called Vision Con, Gypsy slipped her mother's leash.
because she'd been secretly talking to a man she met online, a man named Dan, who was 20 years her senior.
And at the convention, she got away long enough to end up in his hotel room.
And then Dee Dee found them.
And what she did next tells you everything about how deep this deception ran.
She produced paperwork, a birth certificate, showing that Gypsy was a minor, a child, and she threatened to call the police on Dan, and the situation dissolved on the spot.
But the document was falsified, one of the several versions of Gypsy's age that Dee Dee kept in her arsenal.
But in the fallout of the VisionCon incident, Gypsy got hold of something she had never actually been allowed to see, and that was the truth about her own age.
She wasn't a teenager.
At this point, she was actually 19 years old, a legal adult.
So she's finding out that her mother had stolen years from her and Gypsy finally knew it.
And the punishment she got from the VisionCon incident was horrible because Dee Dee actually physically beat her
and destroyed her phone and computer with a hammer.
And for roughly two weeks, Gypsy says, her mother chained her to the bed.
And then Gypsy says that Dee Dee brought a gun into the house and she said it was for protection, but Gypsy read it differently.
And she would later describe being just genuinely afraid, afraid her mother was preparing to do something worse than hitting her and worse than starving her.
So a few months later around June, 2011, Gypsy would try again and she quietly packed a bag and Dee Dee found it.
And in the confrontation that followed with that gun sitting out on the table, something in Gypsy snapped.
