So one year, almost to the day after police found Dee Dee's body, Gypsy Rose's case was closed.
And Nicholas Godejohn's took longer and ended much, much worse.
The prosecutors offered Godejohn a deal as well, but he would turn it down because he'd watched Gypsy get 10 years and he believed a jury hearing the full story, the abuse, the manipulation, the Demona videos, his own diagnosed vulnerabilities might see him as something less than a first degree murderer and might give him something closer to what she got.
But in November of 2018, Godejohn stood trial for first degree murder and the star witness against him was Gypsy Rose Blanchard.
And on the stand, Gypsy did something that still divides people who study this case.
She took the weight and she testified that the plan was real and that she had pushed it and that she talked him into it.
And his defense argued exactly what you'd expect.
A cognitively impaired man and IQ in the low 80s programmed for months by the only person who had ever really loved him.
So the jury deliberated and the jury said no.
because whatever had been whispered into Nicholas Godejohn's ear over those months, he was the one who got on the bus, and he was the one who took the knife, and he was the one who stood over a sleeping 48-year-old woman and stabbed her 17 times.
And the law had a name for that, and the jury used it, and it was first-degree murder.
So he got life in prison with no parole, plus 25 years for armed criminal action.
And he was sent to Potosi Correctional Center,
the maximum security prison where Missouri houses its most serious offenders.
And he has appealed his conviction repeatedly, but every appeal has failed.
So at this point, he will be in prison for the rest of his life.
So in 2016, Gypsy Rose Blanchard arrived at Chillicothe Correctional Center, a woman's prison in Northern Missouri, to serve out her sentence.
And almost immediately, she did something quietly remarkable.
She sat down at a prison computer and she looked up what had happened to her.
because for the first time in her life, no one was monitoring her screen, to a certain degree, because there was obviously prison guards, but not like looking over her shoulder.
