And no one was squeezing her hand to keep her quiet.
And there, in clinical language, Gypsy read the textbook description on Munchausen syndrome by proxy.
The perpetrator profile, the victim profile, and the patterns.
And she also discovered that it wasn't just her and that it actually happened to other children too.
And that none of it was her fault and that somewhere in the literature on the page describing the perpetrators, it was her own mother.
And it kind of reframes everything about how Gypsy talked about prison.
Because when ABC's 2020 sat down with her in January of 2018,
she said the same thing that became this case's defining quote.
And now you can hear it the way she meant it, saying, quote, the prison that I was living in before with my mom, I couldn't walk, I couldn't eat, I couldn't have friends.
Over here, I feel like I'm freer in prison than living with my mom because now I'm allowed to just live like a normal woman, unquote.
because prison had a schedule and rules and locked doors, but it also had solid food and friends her own age and her real birthday.
So it was honestly an upgrade for her.
And while Gypsy served her time inside, outside she was becoming famous.
And in May 2017, when HBO aired Mommy Dead and Dearest, a documentary widely praised as the definitive account of the case, that November, Dr. Phil dedicated a two-part special to the story.
And in March of 2019 came the big one, The Act,
a Hulu limited series dramatizing Gypsy's life with Joey King as Gypsy and Patricia Arquette as Dee Dee.
And it drew millions of viewers and Arquette won the Emmy for her portrayal of Dee Dee Blanchard.
And Gypsy watched the act from prison and she described the experience of seeing her own life compressed and dramatized for an audience as something so strange that English didn't quite have a word for it.
And the fame came looking for her too, just one letter at a time.
And prison pen pal mail poured in.
