I wouldn't fancy it, I don't think.

Well, the worst part was you could see through your feet, if you know what I mean.

You're on a rail.

So if you were scared of heights, it's one thing.

But if you look through and you can see the ground and you stood on what is a railing almost, that was quite scary.

Even I didn't like it, I'll be honest.

But he used to clean my boots, and the players I had, and I used to clean his floodlights.

But we were painting the gates and the turnstiles and cutting the grass with a groundsman and all sorts, you know, in those days.

And I think that was a good system.

I mean, they don't do it now.

It's seen as something health and safety, I think they say.

But I suppose when you think about it, climbing floodlights, maybe it was a bit dangerous.

Yeah, I don't think it did us any harm at all.

You know, I had about three or four players to look after their boots, you know, so they would give me a tip at Christmas.

That really helped me because the wages, I was on £4, 10 shillings a week, which is £4.50 now in new money.

And strangely enough, could live quite well on it.

Paid £2 for me digs and the club paid £2.

And I had £2.50 or £2.10 to spend.

And it doesn't sound like a lot, but it went quite a long way in those days.
