I thought that was a good system.
Obviously, it had to change.
And I think now it's gone the opposite way.
There's too many kids going into academies.
They can't all make it.
And, you know, you've got ridiculous things like Chelsea have got, I think, 30 players out on loan.
It's like they're trying to collect every pebble on the beach, hoping to just find a nugget.

For me, the best thing that happened to me at Scunthorpe United was playing in the Midland League with the reserves.
That really toughened me up.
You know, I was just a little skinny kid playing on the wing and I was playing against minors who were working all week and then getting a little bit extra for playing part-time on a Saturday for teams like Gainsborough Trinity and Long Eat and Hena and Belper and all these teams around Derby and Nottingham, mainly.
And it toughened me up.
You know, it really made a man of me, really.
Well, that's because my dad was a miner and his last words to me as I got in the car to go with Ron Ashman, the manager, to drive over the Pennines.
It was woodhead in those days and no motorway.
My dad just said to me, son, don't sell yourself cheap.
and it sort of stuck in my mind so when i got to meet bill shankley eventually obviously i sat on a dustbin to start with because um the new stand which they've just knocked down for the now new stand was about to be opened and they weren't quite ready to move in so there was the old development office where i met bill shankley and he was in with someone so i sat on a dustbin outside while we waited to go round the corner
the street that's just been knocked down for the newsstand yeah to see doc the doctor dr reed i think it was uh for the medical so uh yeah it was it was um when we came i passed my medical obviously and and then he i remember shank saying to me as we were stripping off he said have you ever thought of being a boxer son you know because he loved boxing he looked boxing he loved gangsters those were the two things i don't know why i love gangsters
But we won't go there.
But he was, you know, he was a bit James Cagney type character in a nice way.
