You know, honest gentleman, friendly, interested in what you have to say.

You know, never judgmental, at least too often with me, which is kind of fun.

But, no, from the day – I mean, I met Cal in the early 80s when he was opening up some of his Gasland retail outfits in northern Alberta.

And Glenn Anderson was his pitch man, and they brought me along to a couple of store openings and really got to know him a little bit then.

And then, of course –

In 2000, when he and another fine Edmonton gentleman, Bruce Penick, showed up at my door, kids running around all over the house, they showed up to ask me if I'd like to be the general manager or wanted to put my name in the hat to become general manager when Glenn Saylor left.

And from that point on, I had an amazing relationship and really feel fortunate I got to know the man.

and uh and i really think it's important that he's celebrated big time and i hope that the the city and or others are thinking about something significant to name after cal nichols because i mean lots of people will acknowledge that the orders are important to town others won't but the fact is uh without cal nichols the orders wouldn't still be here today so uh that's that's a pretty important fact to remain to remember from everyone

No question.

And of course, all of them deserve, you know, all the thanks in the world.

You know, Cal was the upfront, more public force.

Certainly he was, you know, he was a dog on the bone to get to the 106 million they needed to close the deal with the bank to keep the team in town.

And the rest was history.

But again,

No, I think a lot of them really felt, I mean, they were all big fans of the Oilers.

They all felt that, you know, if we tighten controls a bit on spending and do a better job of scouting, you know, we could exist.

But really, from 2000 until the NHL lockout

2004-2005,

I mean, it became more and more apparent that it was tough for the Oilers to compete.

The building would be full.
