Jade's bag isn't there.
Her laptop isn't, and neither is her phone.
Everything she would take to walk out that door and start her day was gone.
Jade walked out the gate of her own home in the rain at 625 in the morning,
to wait for a friend that she had known her entire life.
And somewhere in those eight minutes before Cherise pulled up, she vanished.
But let's go back to that morning that Cherise knew something was wrong before she even had a reason to, because there wasn't anything concrete to point to yet.
No sign of a struggle, nothing at a place at the gate outside of Jade's home, just an empty spot where her friend should have been standing and a phone that rang and rang.
But Cherise had known Jade since they were little girls.
And Jade was the kind of person who texted you back, who was where she said she would be, who wasn't just not going to be there.
So Cherise didn't tell herself a comfortable story.
She didn't decide that Jade had just slept in or wandered off or forgotten.

Jade's husband was calling her family.
Her family was calling each other.
Her father was leaving work.
Her mother was refusing to leave the house in case the phone rang.
This was 2015, so by mid-morning, there were flyers and hashtags and strangers sharing Jade's photo all over social media and over the city.
