There's so much research.
And I feel really fortunate to have learned it along the journey.
And I think about the people that come onto MacuHealth's team now and all of the stuff they have to learn, like, in one fell swoop.
And I can only imagine how intense that must feel because I was essentially able, like as the paper came out, I was like reading it, so excited about it and just so excited to learn about the trajectory of the science.
And I sort of kind of grew up with it, it feels like a little bit.
So yeah, that's me.
Well, if you consider the fact that if a person lives long enough, they probably will get age related macular degeneration.
Like this is a conversation for everyone, for everyone who has, um, you know, um,
functioning retinas, um, you know, for seeing people through their whole life, like this is an important conversation.
And so I'm really excited about this because yeah, it's definitely like, that was the origin story of carotenoids because it, you know, you have to kind of pick a small, when you're, you know, just in my experience with being surrounded by scientific researchers for the last 15 years, um, you know, you kind of have to start small with your questions to, to get bigger with your questions and to understand more.
And so, um, yeah,
The origin story though is all about AMD.
Okay.
Well...
So one of the things that I think is important to understand is that zeaxanthin is a term that's used to encompass multiple stereoisomers.
So zeaxanthin is kind of a broad brush term.
There's actually, I think, six different zeaxanthin isomers.
One of them has been identified as the central protective carotenoid in the fovea, which is mesozeaxanthin.
yeah so there's so there's zeaxanthin and then there's mesozeaxanthin so the way i kind of explain macular pigment because i um i can see my background here i love i like mountains we live in the mountains i live in the pacific northwest so i always like to um you know it's like a it's like a volcano right so from the very tip top of the volcano all the way to the earth's crust and that central conical changer that that's where mesozeaxanthin is so it's the most volumetrically dense of the three carotenoids and then
The tree line of the mountain is zeaxanthin, and actually the valley floor is lutein.
