We have to remember that it's not abnormal to suffer.
That's the thing that gets us.
You know, when we think that somehow we aren't supposed to suffer.
But that is actually what being human is largely about.
Um, but people do suffer different amounts and in different ways, and we need so we need to hold the pain of that.
At the same time we really need to remember we aren't alone.
Yeah, well it was really a personal journey.
You know, I I was under a lot of stress.
Um it was more than twenty years ago, um and I had learned mindfulness meditation, hoping to deal with my stress and the woman leading the course.
I talked about the importance of self compassion, you know, about being actively warm and supportive and kind to yourself.
Um, and so I started trying it and I was just blown away by the difference it made.
Um and then I did some research on self esteem in my postdoctoral work.
I'm always learning all the the problems with self esteem, like the like we had to be special and above average.
And, you know, it's a fair weather friend.
Self esteem is there for us when we succeed, but what happens when we fail?
You know, it deserts us.
And so I really realized that self compassion was a really perfect alternative because it's a source of support and strength and stability and motivation, you know, constantly in good times and in bad.
And so yeah, I've d really devoted my uh my life's work to this topic and uh it's been about twenty years now.
Absolutely.
I mean it it's a life's work, right?
