So some 17 inhabitants and me living together in close quarters, warming our cabins.

They're actually mud houses.

So warming those mud houses with wood fire smoke.

and walking the mountains from morning till evening.

I would step out at first light, 6 or 7 a.m.

whenever the sun would be coming up, and I would stay out till evening.

And my first snow leopard sighting was quite serendipitous.

Casually sitting on the terrace of the camp and, you know, scanning around to see blue sheep.

I did not expect to find a snow leopard so easily.

But then a little kid from the village peered through my spotting scope and said there's a blue sheep stuck in the snow.

And that just didn't make sense.

So I had to go and check it out myself.

And it happened to be a snow leopard with only the head and the back sticking out of the snow, rest of it plowing through two feet deep snow.

And as I was trying to make sense of the scene in front of me, a second snow leopard entered the frame.

And at that moment, I just couldn't imagine what was happening in front of me.

So I called my colleagues and together we went up closer across a gorge from these two snow leopards and watched them for hours.

And while we were watching them, a third snow leopard entered the frame.

And that moment felt unreal because here we were watching three snow leopards when we were not supposed to see even one.
