They occur in very low densities.
So just all the odds were against us.
In that region, the previous snow leopard sighting was almost 10 years before me.
So it just seemed unreal that you would see three snow leopards together at the same time.
Mountaineering has been my calling for a long time.
And I was looking for a challenge in the mountains that had not been attempted before.
By the time I was a young man, all the big mountains had been climbed.
Many of them had been climbed in winter.
And I found that one of the greatest mountaineers of all time, Reinhold Messner, had found a mystery in trying to see if the Yeti was real or not.
And he was drawn by a single footprint of the Yeti to mount an expedition to look for them.
So as a young man,
Impressed by all of this, when I saw a pugmark of a snow leopard, I was completely taken in to realise that this is the greatest mystery of my time and this is what I would want to chase.
So a snow leopard is the most beautiful wild cat one can imagine.
The snow leopard is about 40 kilos, so a little larger than a German shepherd dog.
The tail is as long as the body.
So half of it is in the tail and the tail is thick and fluffy.
The coat is okra red and brown with rosettes on, you know, which look like lichen on top of a brown boulder.
The ears are round and short because they live in such cold habitats that they can't lose heat from the ears.
