The blue sheep is actually a sheep-like goat.

It is closest to what is the theoretical ancestor between sheep and goats.

And the blue color is actually not blue.

It's gray.

But look at them in the evening light from the right angle.

You can imagine them to be appearing blue.

And I won't blame the romantics for naming them blue sheep.

So that's the thing.

Peter Matthiessen wrote one of the most influential books about snow leopards, but he was in the mountains for only two months.

I, on the other hand, have right now spent about 22 years.

My PhD itself was three years of living in the mountains.

So it's the amount of time spent in these areas that really made it worthwhile.

So you're right, snow leopards are the closest relatives of tigers and not really leopards.

But that's a genetic detail.

Snow leopards are very shy and they have an excellent camouflage.

If they don't want you to see them, you will never see them.

So they're really, really good at hiding and being still where their camouflage makes them invisible.

And that's part of the challenge.

That's also part of their allure.
