This final note on the way out today, which I'm going to preface with this statement of fact, despite the lies that President Trump tells about it, there is zero, zero evidence that American economic statistics are being manipulated to make him look bad.
You'll remember he fired the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics last August in service of that lie.
That's point number one.
Point number two comes from a new paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research.
The operative phrase here is the marginal value of public trust in official statistics.
The NBER estimates that preserving trust in government data generates economic benefits of about $25 for every $1 spent on the BLS's budget.
