I sort of couldn't be here today, but I am so honored to stand in her presence to be able to present this incredible proclamation to so many wonderful folks behind me.

It says, whereas Broward County Office of the State Attorney defines domestic violence as a pattern of behavior used to establish power and control by one family or household member of another family or household member

through fear and intimidation, including the threat of use of violence.

With the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that in the United States, more than 10 million adults experience domestic violence annually, and nearly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men experience sexual violence, physical violence, and or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime.

As the Florida Department of Children's Services, excuse me, Families reports that in 2020, 106,615 domestic violence crimes were reported to the Florida law enforcement agencies.

As the Florida Department of Law Enforcement reported that in 2020, 217 individuals died because of domestic violence homicide, representing approximately 20% of all Florida homicides.

As the Florida Department of Health reports that in 2023,

The rate per 100,000 of domestic violence offenses in Broward County was 132.1, an increase of 9% over the previous year.

That's horrific.

Whereas the Broward County Board of County Commissioners recognizes its domestic violence community partners in the Human Services Department, Community Partnerships Division's Health Care Services Section for their commitment to meaningful changes to assist victims and reduce instances of domestic violence.

Now, therefore, it be proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Broward County, Florida, that the Board hereby designates October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month right here in Broward County, signed by, of course, our Mayor B. Furr.

And again, this is something that not needs to talk about in October, but year-round.
