Soriano's sinker, from my perspective, if you didn't show me his results and you just looked at his plot and what he does, I would anticipate that not being an awful pitch to lefties.
There's an individual I think now works for the Orioles named Cameron Levy who did a piece a bit ago for Pitcher List about how
not all sinkers are created equal from a platoon standpoint.
There's this old taboo of don't throw sinkers to oppo-handed hitters.
So if you're a righty, don't throw it to a lefty a lot, primarily because it just runs down the barrel through the back path.
And we've seen, for the most part, if you look at how platoon-heavy a lot of sinkers are, that they're not particularly good oppo-hand weapons.
But the ones that succeed oppo-hand are the ones that have a lot of drop.
relative to the pitcher's arm angle.
And it's not necessarily because they miss bats.
It's just purely because hitters don't have a good ability to lift that pitch.
And Soriano's sinker has a lot of that characteristic where it has a lot of drop.
He does have a slightly below average arm angle, but...
I would anticipate that being good.
So I unfortunately don't have a good answer as to why it hasn't been good to the oppo hand because the template of sinker it is, I would anticipate having some success.
Perhaps it's just the nature of him throwing it a bit too much and hitters being aware.
I would imagine Hunter Browns is a bit more of like a...
kind of up away-ish pitch and Soriano's was maybe more like an end zone down pitch just based on the shape.
Maybe that has some influence.
Maybe it's an interaction effect with the foreseen fastball.
There's a lot of things you could probably play on there as to why it's not that great of a weapon.
