Because I think listening and taking in that information is just really key in being successful in the interview process.
be thinking about building their networks lauren what do you think about that yeah i think it's all about flipping the script and telling you know there are people it reminds me of whenever i meet a student at an event and they say i'm a sophomore and i have no experience how am i going to get an internship i always say flip the script i'm sure you do have experience and then slowly you hear that they've done all these things and they're they're in all these clubs and they do have experience i think it's similar with networking you think you have no contacts but up you had that internship
and you had a supervisor and you had a colleague and you had a fellow intern that you worked with there's three contacts right there you say you have no contacts but you're in a sorority and there's a house mom and you have you know five professors who you see every week so you have your basketball coach or whoever it might be so i think we all say oh we don't know anybody but but then we do know people so i encourage everyone to sort of look inwards and look at that inner circle um
Don't overlook any contact, even contacts that don't work in the same industry.
It's all about telling people what you want to do and being really specific about it.
Yeah, great question.
There's a lot of ways to think about it.
If the job that you're applying for is social media based or touches social media, so some type of creative marketing position, digital marketing position, you're going to want to know social media.
And your employer is going to want to hire someone that has a solid presence on social media.
And you don't need to have a big following, but they want you to be savvy enough that they're confident that you know what's going on.
And you can help them be associated with the latest and greatest trends that are out there.
If your job does not know, just to caveat that, can you get hired for a marketing position without a presence on social media?
Yes, I've hired people that don't have presences on social media, right?
But is it ideal?
No.
If you're applying for a job that has nothing to do with social media, I don't think it matters.
If your job doesn't have to do with that, they're going to ask about your previous experiences and other things to help make that decision.
And then it's really interesting.
I think there used to be this sense of, at least from an employment standpoint, you used to be worried about hiring people with a lot of followers.
People would say, you can't hire that person.
