They have no choice except for going down the hill to the not very nice place, Lower Moor, I think it's called.

But actually, we find out at the end that one of them has lived an incredibly full and interesting life, but we only meet her ever doing puzzles.

But of course, the puzzles symbolise what she's done way back in her youth.

There is no point flashing at someone who won't be appalled by it.

Yeah, and I think there's another really sort of beautiful observation in it, which is the importance of everybody's collected bits and pieces, their antiques and their jewellery and little bits of furniture.

That then the symbolism of them all burning these things when Covid comes because they're all terrified you mustn't touch anything.

And it really stands for how people's lives are suddenly just gone.

And so all these little treasures that we have and we hold great importance for are sort of but nothing when you die.

And I think both books pick up very much on loneliness and, you know, how do we connect with other people?

Yeah, it's really hard reading and I sort of found myself wanting to get out of it just as so many of the characters are wanting to get out of it.

It makes you feel really, well, more than uncomfortable, I mean, just, it's shocking.

What did you find particularly shocking?

There's the casual cruelty and then there's the really meant, intended cruelty that is just relentless and...

And our sort of person that we're following all the way through is Flory, who you almost feel he's trying to get out of his body.

You know, it's so vile being there and being himself.
