And I think for me, safety for me needs to come before empathy.
Like I don't have a relationship with my dad and that's what it needed to look like for me.
I don't know what that needs to look like for you, but I will say that it can come down to your will, your love, you can't be the rescuer in this.
You need to have boundaries and you can love the person and you can support the person in every way that you can.
I won't tell you what your support will look like.
It might look different to what I needed to do.
but it's when it comes to the promises I think for a lot of people they believe that they will stop and like I said it's not strong enough the clutches of addiction are too strong unfortunately you know to just be washed away with a promise or a hope like there's a difference between abstinence which is what I think I'm seeing in the email and recovery and recovery it's a process you know I think
And I think you'd be able to speak more on that, Brenda, like on that side of it.
But from the person who's getting hurt on the other side, boundaries are really important and assessing what you can do and what you can't do.
Because we're on eggshells otherwise, you know.
Is there anything you want to say on that?
Like I said, safety comes first for me.
Yeah.
That has to.
There's a lot I'll personally, I consider myself really empathetic.
Like, you know, there's a lot I'd push through in terms of like, and boundary support because I need to mind myself.
But when it surpasses safety and particularly since becoming a mum,
knowing the harms that can come from having a relationship with someone and I've I've love I've forgiveness for my dad I really do like I've empathy for him I don't think I could have lived the childhood he lived either I really don't but when it comes to a point of abuse when it comes to a point of
yeah safety emotional harm to me potentially to my children um then safety is more important than empathy you know that's what I had to look like for me that was my and I think that should be everyone's really line safety you know um because then two people are getting harmed and I just think that's so lovely to say Brenda as someone who's been on the other side to know that like it's very reassuring sometimes that's a weight off your back to know that you can't be someone's saviour
Yeah.
