They were offering 4% on their current account interest at that point.

That was in 2000.

And then we had, of course, my personal favorite, which was ICP.

And all of these things is what people remember Halifax for.

But if you go, let's really go back in time now.

I'm a big champion and a big believer in building societies because at the heart of a building society is a kind of local banking in which the whole idea of them was people with spare cash could deposit money and receive interest.

and then others could borrow funds to buy or build a house.

And that was basically the whole principle of building societies.

And actually, in the 1890s, at the peak, there was 3,642 building societies.

But thanks to all mergers, acquisitions, demutualizations,

There's now just 42 building societies left, one of which is nationwide, which is absolutely huge compared to the other building societies that still exist.

And then actually by the early decades of 1900s, Halifax went from being more of a local society to a more of a national facing brand.

And in 1928, it took over a major rival building society brand.

Had lots of assets and it became the biggest building site in the world at that point.

And then it was instrumental in the First World War, helping people funding house building schemes.
