But if you look a little bit more broadly, Gallup has some interesting numbers on U.S.

employee engagement overall.

For two consecutive years, employee engagement has fallen in the U.S.

workforce, but Gen Z and younger millennials, the people who were born in 1989 and after, they've reported the lowest engagement of all during the first quarter of 2022, coming in at 31%.

More than half of these people were quantified as not engaged, 54% of them, which meant, you know, kind of showing up pretty passively, doing their work and not much else.

So one person I talked to, Elise Friedman at the consulting firm Korn Ferry, brought up exactly this.

She pointed out that workers have been coasting on the clock for a long time, that this sense of, you know, I'm going to do my job and not much else, that's not a new phenomenon.

But she mentioned how remote work can make it a little bit easier to not put up your hand when, you know, your plate is clear, to not sort of get the drop-by assignment from a boss.

it's a lot easier to, you know, skate by or take care of personal things instead of raising your hand and say, hey, I need more work.

One is that Gen Z and younger workers are reporting that they feel less like their work has purpose.

And without sort of that connection between what you're doing and why it matters, it might be a little bit easier to dial back your own engagement.

There are two other factors that I think are worth mentioning too.

The first is that for Gen Z workers, they've had very little workplace experience outside of the pandemic.

COVID for so many workers and employees totally broke down barriers between work and life.

And some people basically said that they're trying to build those barriers back up basically, that they want more division between their work brains and their relaxation home brain.
