I think the overall trajectory is, you know, we're having a debate about drugs now, which is based on evidence, right?
We're able to look at other countries, see what's happening.
I mean, I think, you know, this is the point of having Citizens' Assembly and why we have committees in Parliament, right, is to be able to have some of these debates that are grounded in evidence.
I did feel once it got into the Dáil chamber,
like it started to slip back into more of a moral argument.
And I think where, you know, where the committee is coming from in terms of decriminalisation is about the fact that, like, we can't ignore the kind of class element of this.
Who does get searched?
I think there was somebody suggesting that, you know, you should be able to search phones at will.
You know, who does end up... Joe Duffy made this... Exactly, yeah.
I can imagine.
And I do think that that's potentially where the committee is coming from is more that by criminalising possession and use, a lot of those, a lot of the kind of,
impacts of that are falling kind of heavily on particular groups.
But I just want to see, you know, this is a public health challenge.
I think we are heading in that direction as a country of looking at this as a public health issue.
But I still just feel a lot of these moral arguments coming back in.
Well, and then we also have situations where brand new drugs arrive, right?
And, you know, there's a factory in China is able to synthesize MDMA that gets around our bands and then we're scrambling to try and catch up, right?
So to me, this is why it's about like a system, like what is the system that we have in place that is grounded in evidence?
And, you know, and that example from Oregon is one, but like, did that compare, you know, that to another city or to another state?
