And of course, also, the idea is someday they could be useful.
Not this, you know, this is a very rudimentary platform.
But the idea is that you might be able to make biological factories.
Like already E. coli is used, like a genetically engineered version of E. coli is used to make insulin.
So the idea is maybe if you could completely control your artificial cell, you could program it to create all kinds of things that are otherwise scarce or hard to make, you know, biofuels or make medicines.
So, you know, long way down the line, there are a lot of possibilities.
Well, at this stage, we're OK.
As Kai says, this cannot reproduce by itself, you know, left alone for a given amount of time.
That is the big worry with artificial life, is that it could reproduce, escape into the wild and have these kind of unknown effects.
That absolutely cannot happen here.
But, you know,
it is the kind of thing where we should probably be laying groundwork for the future because i'm not sure that the regulations that we have at the moment are really fit to deal with that kind of stage that we might reach where yeah you have this kind of artificial life that is able to reproduce that is able to evolve the laws certainly here in the uk the regulations are all around genetically modified organisms and you know they're just built for something completely different so this is something that uh researchers and and regulators probably do need to start thinking about
So as you hinted at at the top, this is a paper that's kind of to do with history as well as science.
So this is in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science this week.
And it's from researchers at the University of Oxford and Jena in Germany.
