So that is still a bit of a mystery.
There are a bunch of possible paths that he might have taken and it wasn't well documented.
And this is where science is here to help.
So what these researchers did was they tried to effectively figure out which of the four possible routes was the most efficient.
And they're all pretty awful routes, I should add.
So very harsh terrain.
This was October, kind of end of September, October that they were traveling for two weeks.
There was ice, you know, extremely steep.
And so the researchers are calculating how much energy that would have taken.
What was the toll on this trip of the 40,000 men?
I think 7,000 cavalry and 37 elephants.
So they factored in things like how long the route was, how steep the route was.
And they used models of real modern African elephants to estimate how much energy... And it takes a lot to feed an elephant.
It's hundreds of kilograms of plant life a day to feed an elephant.
So they effectively realised that this wasn't possible.
You know, you can't carry that much food on the trip.
That wasn't there for them to eat.
So they were all going to be using up their reserves, their kind of fat reserves.
And they found that there was one out of the four possible routes, the Col de la Traversette, that used the least energy.
Until today, that has been some historians' kind of favourite, but I think overall they were leading towards this other route.
