So now this adds some evidence that maybe if Hannibal was sensible, that's the route he would have taken.
Well, I don't think he was doing like bioenergetics calculations, but he was, I mean, he's known as being this incredibly good tactician.
You know, he was a great military leader.
He would have known that an army marches on its stomach and probably would have been familiar or at least had people who are familiar with elephants and would have spoken to travellers about the route.
So the researchers here suggest that this kind of adds weight.
It doesn't prove anything, but it adds weight to the idea that Hannibal picked this specific route.
Not via bioenergetics, no.
But this is, you know, it's giving an extra clue.
And also what I thought was pretty interesting was it shows that actually elephants were not as barmy an idea as you might think.
You know, we always go, in my head anyway, we're like, why on earth do you take elephants across the Alps?
Surely they're like these tropical animals.
But actually, they showed that over this journey, elephants would have used up about 4% of their fat reserves.
And that was compared to about 9% in the horses and 19% in the people, in the soldiers.
So a lot of the army, very sadly, over the longer journey, only about half of them made it to the other side, right?
Whereas I think almost all the elephants did.
So actually, elephants were probably quite a good choice.
They have so many, you know, fat reserves that actually, you know, they were able to survive this very arduous journey.
Right.
