It's pretty patchy throughout the US.

There's all sorts of issues with trains and commerce and whatnot.

1942, FDR institutes year-round wartime, which is year-round daylight savings for energy saving.

In 1945, three years later, wartime's repealed.

States and cities set their own rules.

Again, it results in this patchwork.

And confusion peaks in 1954 when, for example, New England extends through October while other states end in September.

And then some go to November and some do one hour, some do staggered.

And so it's a mess.

They live with that for about 20 more years.

And in 1966, the Uniform Time Act is passed, which standardized DST from the last Sunday in April to the last Saturday in October.

That said, states may exempt themselves, which is how Arizona, Hawaii, and portions of Indiana were exempted.

You'll also notice when we look at these lines, there's a creep, the boundaries creep where the western edges push to escape those late sunrises.

1974 to 75, the same things enacted during the oil embargo.

They enact year-round DST to save energy.

There's a ton of public backlash, specifically citing kids going to school in the dark.

And within eight months, they roll it back to the standard six-month on again and off again.

It's the lights on, which we'll get into.

And now it seems to be offset by AC and all the other things that take energy.

2005 Energy Policy Act extends DST from the March to October.
