I know you've been wanting this for a while.
And she says, Oh, our manager didn't realize I wanted to get promoted.
And when I told him I wanted to get promoted, he was like, Oh, okay, sure.
You're ready for that.
And that just blew my mind that you have to be so explicit about it.
But it's true, we think about all our different coworkers.
People are at different life stages, they want different things.
Some people don't want to get promoted because maybe it means a longer commute or more meetings or what have you.
And so to be really explicit about what you want and not just say it once and again assume your manager is going to remember, but to again advocate for yourself, bring it up respectfully, of course, not like every day and being annoying about it, but bring it up regularly so that you

And that can stay top of mind.
And related to that, once you decide, okay, I do want that promotion, don't wait till the last minute when it's annual review time.
Make sure you are planning for that, I mean, at least six months in advance.
And again, like I thought, okay, my manager is just going to assume, you know, once they know, they're just going to decide, is Lorraine ready?
And then I realized.
Oh, there's a whole room full of people who are talking about me.
I have to get buy-in ahead of time.
I have to create a promotion case.
So if you wait till the last minute, once annual reviews are there.
it's probably too late.
