I still, even at this stage, even though I was getting help, I still wanted to be very secret.

You know, I was like, I can't admit that I've got this problem.

And so going to rehab, I was like, if I go to rehab, you know, people find out about this and I can't have anyone find out about this.

So, and eventually got to the point where I said, yeah, you know what, I need to go to rehab and I accept, you know, I'm strong enough and I'm courageous enough to accept that.

What did rehab look like?

I went into a 28-day detox facility.

So I'm in there with hard substance abusers who were detoxing, coming down from their drug.

We had people coming in from really hard drug use and it was very confronting but it was very humbling because I was sitting there and for me, I was looking at these people who I once would have

felt so far removed from and felt probably disdained towards, you know, and then I was sitting there like, these are my people.

These are my peers.

This is actually the community that I'm a part of.

In the years leading up to rehab, reading had slipped out of your life.

When did you start to read again?

Yeah, reading flipped out of my life, you know, when addiction really set in because I didn't have time for reading.

All my spare time was spent on my addiction.

And reading came back to my life really heavily after rehab because once I started to change my life, you know, a big thing with addiction recovery is you have to replace your –

But you have to replace it with something else.

You don't just drop addiction.

It has to be replaced with other things.

So I spent a lot of my time really replacing all the behaviors and triggers and places in my life that I would spend lots of time in, like the pub or things like that, like going to the races on the weekend or going to nightclubs on the weekend, like all those kinds of places.
