So you just have to look at how we combat things like erosion and things like that because of the runoff is so much higher.

And then obviously in the summertime we are seeing temperatures starting to rise.

But with that you can also do other factors to combat that.

And we're very fortunate with our position being so close to the ocean that we've got this massive maritime influence that seems to temper that for us as well.

So for me, where we are, we're in the perfect position to grow our grapes to the best potential.

it is and it's something that we're trying to exacerbate and pull to the fore because i think it's so characteristic of where we are because we have the wind the southerlies pushing in off the the ocean and then we have got some fog that comes up into the vineyards and things like that so it's naturally going to be there and in this cooler climate and um if you stood in our particularly in our Sauvignon Blanc vineyards

they're all facing directly into the ocean.

So they're naturally going to have this salinity coming through.

And I think it's a cornerstone for us.

And when I started working here, I was looking very much for characteristics in the different grapes and vineyards that we could bring to the fore that are going to be more expressive of our sense of place and site.

And I wanted to really bring those and elevate them into the wines.

Well, I grew up, as I said, near Constantia.

And to be honest, I never initially thought I'd go into winemaking.

The whole thought process was actually going into veterinary science.

And I started on that journey.

But I was working on a wine farm in Constantia while I was studying.

And I preferred doing that to what I was studying at this stage.

And...

that the world of wine started to open in front of me, and I found it incredibly fascinating.

Funny enough, when I was working in Constantia, I was working in a little shop there that sold a number of wines from around the winelands, and another winemaker that's doing extremely well for himself now, a guy called Duncan Savage, who was working with me at that time, and we used to talk about the wines and really fell in love with it.
