But I had my first son 10 years ago.
And I think when we're pregnant and we're kind of in that period of our life, we're thinking about nesting and our baby registry and the labor and delivering what that's going to look like.
And everything else beyond having the baby is kind of like a tomorrow problem.
Mm-hmm.
And I think in media, you know, TVs and movies, we've simplified breastfeeding to make it look like it's just a really easy and beautiful and seamless process.
And so that was what I was expecting.
And then my son came a little bit premature and I was being pushed very heavily to provide breast milk to him to help him to thrive.
And I remember I was put on a triple feeding schedule right out of the gate, right after I had him in the hospital.
And triple feeding is probably one of the most physically and emotionally demanding things to ask of a new mom.
So what that entails is nursing your baby and then pumping directly after for them and then feeding that pumped milk to them.
So it's this vicious cycle where that's kind of all you do all day long.
nursing, pumping, washing bottles, feeding baby, changing diaper, and then the process starts all over again.
So I did that for the first nine weeks, not really understanding why it felt like that was all I was doing 24-7, feeling like I was trying to move heaven and earth just to make a little bit more milk, and he still was not able to thrive on my breast milk.
We were having weight gain concerns.
He just seemed very colicky and upset all the time.
And something didn't seem right.
So I worked with a lactation consultant at nine weeks because I just felt I had my breaking point.
And I realized something's not right.
I'm doing all the right things and it's still not working for me.
And there was a kind of a spiral of shame and guilt that comes with that.
