We're trying to assess a person's humanity with what's actual public, you know, knowledge or what public should know and the questions that we should know.

And when it comes to questions of gender identity and sexual orientation, historically speaking, we don't engage directly with that conversation.

And a lot of that had to do with the stigma of yesteryear and how those questions could actually destroy a person's career.

I think we're obviously seeing less and less of that today.

You would think that these kind of conversations would be a lot more free-flowing.

But seasoned journalists would rather much be cautious.

And I am one of those journalists, right?

I would much rather be cautious in this space when it comes to talking about someone's sexual orientation and gender identity without being absolutely true or me being completely knowledgeable about what it is if there is hypocrisy afoot.

So I don't grudge anyone, Don, really, who has been on the trail who didn't ask him directly about those rumors because it's the caution, right, versus what's really required for the public.

But I think it is telling.

if you will, that if you remember when Michelle Bachman was rising in the ranks with the Tea Party and rumors started circulating around her husband, Marcus Bachman, she quickly disappeared in terms of the polls and fundraising and et cetera.

And similarly, when Tim was ascending in the polls and started getting traction and questions about his marital status started to circulate and those rumors started to percolate, he too started to slip away and disappear.

And so, you know, that's not me throwing shade.

That's me remembering the timeline.

And that's something that the Republican Party

I don't know if they care to address as a party, but that's just the way that historically it's just always been, you know, there.

But how do you say that, Don, without... Like, flip it to the Harry Styles model, right?

Harry Styles, you ask him if he's queer, and he's like, how dare you ask me this question?

It doesn't match up.
