But in that instance, what happened was the CCRB prosecuted the case all the way through attempting to fire this officer.
Hate speech.
The NYPD judge in the case agreed it was hate speech.
This is a public record.
They say it's abhorrent.
You should never be able to have a police officer in the NYPD say something like this.
And then the police commissioner at the time undid the discipline.
And the kicker is, is that the headline was just that the police commissioner saved a cop's career.
That was Commissioner Sewell at the time.
Wow.
And it shows the arc and we really get into the details of these cases.
It's horrible stuff, but you got to see in practice how it gets sabotaged because that's what's going on.
Two reasons right now.
One, five years since George Floyd, we gotta look in the mirror.
It's so important to say, where have we come and what can we do moving forward?
And two, we're in a time where democracy is under threat.
And we had just had a Trump's executive order unleashing law enforcement.
And you have to ask yourself, what can I do in civilian oversight on a local level of your police department is a very important control on democracy and public safety.
