Like you can be very isolating and, you know, it's one of the melees of like living in a highly dense city is that the more dense a city is, the more isolated the people are.

And particularly in terms of Japan.

So I just happen to be interested in a lot of the things that are here.

So in particular, the book culture, that's a really big one for me.

So, um, actually when I was doing my Japanese degree, like my undergrad, I already started doing journalism then.

So this is even before I went to Columbia.

So, um, and so, um, and okay.

So during the time, like, um, there was also like magazines were really strong.

Yes.

Yeah.

Japan is like very, very strong for magazines and, um, and even, but during the time globally, like magazines are strong.

Like, so, um, you could actually just live pretty well just doing magazine work.

And so, um, so I was kind of like part of that era.

And so, you know, with Japanese unis, they're pretty lax.

And so, um, I was working at like at an agency called August and they were really, really, really influential and just in the, in the way that I thought, um,

um because they do kind of like advertising campaigns and fashion and kind of stuff but um but they and at a very high quality but they were able to separate their professional work with their personal interests so um so they always had like passion projects going on so um the boss is like um peter ryan like he um

like yeah they're just doing like very very high-end like fashion but um but because he was into street culture and things like that so he would he would put a lot of his creative energy into doing his passion projects while doing this at the same time and so that's kind of like how i do my work as well so um it like no matter what i do um in terms of like my more mainstream work like i always try and have a passion project going on parallel so yeah

So that was going on while I was in university and then I started writing as well.

So actually I've been doing this subculture works like from when I was in university.

But most of them, most of them have a common thread of like craftsmanship.
