All of those strategies take our eyes off the word that we're actually trying to decode.

And that leads to guessing.

Those sort of strategies, of course, they don't...

bring the mastery of the code or the mastery of the sounds, you know, mapped into the children's brains.

So what we want is focused in on those sounds.

So when a child comes to an unknown word, instead of looking at the picture or skipping that word, we'll say...

Look at the sounds, what sounds can you see?

And then try sliding those sounds together.

Now, sometimes as a parent, we might need to help them with some of those sounds.

So rather than just giving the whole word,

Help with giving some of those sounds.

If a child is uncertain of those sounds.

Yeah.

Encourage them to slide through and work out that word for themselves because that is what's going to orthographically map, which is our fancy word for basically saying, put it into the brain.

So I think teachers are really getting on board with what we're teaching.

I've seen lots and lots of teachers and parents educate themselves as to what, first of all, what are the sounds of the alphabet?

I think I've yet to lead a workshop of educators that know every single sound, even of our basic alphabet.

And a lot of that is because we haven't been taught that.
