And you knew when he was going to press defenders, you knew to back him up because there's a good chance that he was going to

going to catch defenders off guard and the ball was going to break at some point.

So things like that were important to recognise and support him with.

Yeah, I think he did to start with.

I remember when I first joined the club and it was in pre-season and one of the physios actually said that he was going to cause defenders all sorts of trouble in the Premier League.

And I remember sat there thinking, well, I've not really heard too much about Vards and like...

he did look good in the game and I was thinking these Premier League defenders are top quality top like real top top defenders so it's not going to be as easy as that but I was yeah I was completely wrong and he caused every defender problems

I think it was good in terms of like the integration of other players as well.

People like Shinji Akazaki, who didn't really speak too much English when he first came over or even in the latter years.

But he was like, that's where he'd really come out of his shell and really, really turn up.

He was first on the karaoke if we was going out.

I just think everybody sort of, when you're together at the training ground, there's that little bit of pressure every day in training.

But when you're sort of out of the football environment, everyone just relaxes a bit more and you can have more personable conversations.

First of all, technically, he's probably the best that I've seen.

I think his first touch was incredible.

The ball could come over from 60, 70 yards and he could put his first touch wherever he wanted.

I think his attitude as well was good in the sense that he was so relaxed and didn't mind making mistakes, didn't mind sort of, he'd just keep trying things.

Even if it weren't coming off, he'd just keep trying and keep trying.

the team had a good balance about it as well and that allowed him to go and express himself and go and do the things.

And I think his love of the game as well, since he's gone on to obviously Manchester City and played in the Champions League, he always used to speak about the Champions League and that was always a dream of his to be playing in that and doing well in that on that stage.
