Well, much of my thinking on that was influenced by Andrew Weil, Andy Weil, W-E-I-L, who was a famous integrated physician, one of the first MDs to go to China and study acupuncture or the Amazon or ayahuasca.
What a lot of people don't realize is he had the same mentor I did.
It was Schultes.
And Andy did some very thought-provoking books, which are much overlooked today, even though they're worth going back and reading.

Why do people like to get high?
Well, why do little kids spin in a circle until they fall over?
They're getting high, right?
They're altering their consciousness.
So there is something in our mind or our genes or whatever that wants us to get away from ourselves.
And that could be spinning in a circle till you drop.
That could be like a Sufi dancing all night.
That could be taking ayahuasca.
It could be having a drink at the bar, smoking a joint.
It's just that human desire to escape.
And I think anybody who's had out-of-body experiences
where you've been in a local longhouse or ceremony, and you look down and you see yourself lying there in the hammock, or you're in a hospital, and for whatever reason, you're seeing your body from outside.
It just gives you a different perspective, literally.
And I think that's part of it.
Is there more to life than what we see in front of us every day?
