It's biocultural conservation.
It's working in partnership with indigenous peoples, first and foremost, the shamans, male and female.
to empower them to protect their culture and their forests, which they see as inextricable.
When I started out in conservation, I was working for the World Wildlife Fund.
It was all about saving the forest, saving the rhinos, saving the whales.
Great.
But they had nothing to do with indigenous peoples.
And then there were groups like cultural survival, survival international.
They were all about saving the indigenous peoples, but they had nothing to do with ecosystem conservation.
We were the first organization set up 30 years ago this year to focus on indigenous lands, indigenous peoples.
Not doing it or telling them what to do, but trying to empower them, train them in ways that they could take control of their own cultural and environmental destiny.
And, you know, we've got priority projects that need funding.
You know, we know we do.
We have a successful methodology.
We are working with over 100 indigenous groups in Amazonas to protect over 100 million acres of ancestral rainforest.
And it's been so successful that indigenous peoples outside the Amazon, like the famous Kogis, the most spiritual people in the hemisphere, have asked us to work with them.
We've been working closely with them for 10 years.
The indigenous peoples are asking our help to protect coastal resources, protect sea turtles.
All the way up Costa Rica and possibly as far north as Oaxaca.
So it's not like, wouldn't it be great if we tried this crazy approach?
