My last book, The Amazon, What Everybody Needs to Know, I totaled up the number of admixtures, and ayahuasca is all about admixtures.
Here's what's confusing about ayahuasca.
Ayahuasca is a vine, but you always need to use something else with it, or it really doesn't pack a punch, okay?
So people use psychotrevirus, which is known commonly as chikuna.
And that potentiates the reaction.
If you just take either of those two plants by themselves, you don't see fireworks, all right?
But in going through the literature while writing this book, I found there's over 100 different admixtures that have been recorded.
Now, you can't tell me that every one of those has the same effect.
And so even the stuff that we know, there's more to know that we don't know.
And I'll give you another theory of mine.
There was an Israeli ethnobotanist named Benny Shannon.
Benny Shannon died, I think, a year ago.
But Benny said, you know, I'm an old Jewish guy, and I never understood how a man could go into the Sinai and talk to a burning bush.
He said, then I went to Peru and I drank ayahuasca.
And I said, now I understand how a man can talk to a burning bush.
But there's no ayahuasca in the Sinai.
However, and this gets a little technical, not too much, when ayahuasca was first analyzed in the lab, they pulled the alkaloid out and they called it telepathine because, as you know, in the ceremony you can communicate telepathically with the shaman.
But further research revealed that actually that alkaloid had been found before, not in ayahuasca, but in a plant from the Sinai, Syrian rue.
So that was half the ayahuasca formula.
