We were a composite troop.

Okay.

Yeah.

We were about a team of 30.

So that's about four teams of six.

And then the headquarters zone, which I'm a part of.

And so I was the true commander, but also the team leaders are experienced patrol commanders.

They might be sergeants or corporals who have been in the unit for a number of years.

So they were experienced.

And one of them was Matthew Locke, sergeant, who'd fought –

With Ben Robert Smith in Afghanistan in 2005, just beforehand, 2006.

So we had plenty of experience in the team and we just – our first mission, this is still in the early stages of Afghanistan, was kind of a combination of what they call advanced force operations where –

They might be seeking to do a major operation in a valley to secure it.

And one of the things our unit's good at is reconnaissance and intelligence collection.

So we might visit that area and collect a whole bunch of intelligence by putting in overwatch posts or going on patrols at night behind enemy lines, which they call close target reconnaissance units.

And it's a really classic kind of SAS.

It's a very old school jungles of Borneo and Vietnam, that type of work.

But we did some of that to try and discover what was happening behind any lines in these important valleys.

It felt like I was trained for it and ready for it.

I was excited by it.
