I'd just never seen.

We'd been deployed, but this was a real shooting match.

The consequences were there.

It was just a bit – yeah, it was definitely – and I remember at the start of that tour, I think it was the first Australian casualty since Andy Russell in 2002 was Poppy Pierce.

I think he was a Cav guy that was killed by an IED strike, which is a roadside bomb.

Killed by a roadside bomb in an Australian armored vehicle.

And I remember seeing – I remember being at the gate and seeing them tow that vehicle back in.

It was destroyed and I was like –

This is a real conflict.

Yeah.

Oh, yeah.

Yeah.

Yeah, and it got worse as the years went on.

The explosives and triggers got more advanced to defeat our kind of mechanisms.

And by the end of my tours, they were now the foot-based ones.

Yeah.

In the early stages, it was more vehicle-based mines, but then after that, you'd be on foot and get blown up.

And so I didn't walk on a bloody dirt track for six months after I got home.

I'd be walking through the bush.

Yeah.
