People thought that we might be more on the side of Google than we were on the side of the European Union.
It doesn't seem to be much of a suspicion this time around.
But the main thing really on the table is that in the next two or three weeks, Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, she brings their first reports basically of what's a panel on online safety for children.
And that's one of the big first pieces that would be published by the Commission during Ireland's EU presidency.
So then it gets handed over to the member states to decide what to do with the commission's report.
And I suppose all eyes really will be on whether or not that includes a proposal for an EU-wide social media ban for kids.
Now, technology companies based in Duggan obviously have been lobbying hard, not just Ireland, but they've been lobbying EU officials on this for some time.
But the Taoiseach did say when he met the president of the European Parliament, Roberto Mazzola, in Dublin last week, that he believes there's a potential for what he said would be a powerful and impactful European-wide position to emerge over the next six months that would protect children online.
You know, we've seen it done.
The UK are bringing in a ban on social media for kids.
Australia has it.
And I think it's something that could potentially happen under the Irish presidency of the EU.
Yeah, I guess that's it, really.
I mean, if it all goes well and is planned, it'll probably not take up too much headspace or won't be noticed too much.
You know, it's just the potential, I guess, for any sort of security disruption, protests, cyber attacks or, you know, traffic chaos, which we'll expect anyhow, or even the criticism over spending.
And we already see, I mean...
Over the weekend, Pather Tobin of Aint, who had a statement in saying that Garda investigations are going to be put aside or cast aside because Garda will have to be redirected or reshuffled away to the European presidency.
So, I mean...
The potential for sort of small kind of slip ups, I think that could be damaging.
But on the more positive side, if it all goes off smoothly, I'm not sure there is too much to be gained politically from this, from the government or the ministers.
