I mean, yes, it's good for Micheál Martin to be seen as the sort of statesman and that will do his image no harm.
But I don't think it's going to make too much difference in terms of
You know, you could argue that the presidency is maybe buying Micheál Martin more time.
You know, there's been rumblings about his leadership for some time in his party now.
And the consensus was always that things would be put on ice until after the EU presidency.
So in that sense, you could argue it's bought him time.
Whether a successful EU presidency would buy him more time beyond that, I'm not entirely sure that it will.
I think once it's over, it'll be fairly back to business as usual.
Yeah, and I think it shows that the divisions that were there in both those parties back in 2018, and I remember covering it at the time, the divisions were very strong and they still run deep in many ways.
Like what the vote in the Dáil the other night highlights really is, I think for Fianna Fáil, that it's still a Conservative party.
I thought there was an irony in the fact that Micheál Martin
back in 2018, he was him and Simon Coveney and there were others who, you know, had reservations about repeal and the legislation and they were ones who were described at the time as sort of going on a journey or, you know, changing their view throughout the process.
And Micheál Martin, in many ways, had to be sort of brought around by some people in his party at the time to the position that Fianna Fáil, that he ultimately took in supporting repeal.
And
Now the tables have turned somewhat because his party, now Manny and his party, and what they've been saying the last few days, think that maybe it's a little bit further or a little bit more liberalised than what they would be comfortable with.
And the results show, I think, was...
29 or 30 Fianna Fáil TDs voted against this motion.
And many were uncomfortable with the way that Micheál Martin said in the Dáil that he was going to back it.
So I think Fianna Fáil is maybe showing itself to be more of a Conservative Party in that sense.
For Fine Gael also split on the issue.
