You had that end of season 95 where he does this incredible Suzuka performance, slicks in the wet, recovering from a spin, just so good on such a driver's track, really properly pressuring Shimaka in a superior car.

And he gets to Adelaide and just sort of drives into the side of Shimaka when Shimaka is really past him.

And that's that snapshot of the two things you had within a Lacey.

but the good bits were so good you sort of ignored the crazy bits or hoped that was kind of Ferrari's fault.

So this was completely logical to me.

I genuinely went to 96 thinking Alessi is an absolute title contender here.

I didn't think he'd pick up where Schumacher left off because even at that stage as a teenager, I knew how much of Schumacher's brand was relentless consistency, get things done in a way that Alessi did not have the capacity for.

But I thought the peaks would be high enough.

In a team like Benetton, this would be a huge success.

The Hakkinen comparison is bang on because I said a second ago that it was Schumacher and the Lacey being talked of in the same breath in 93.

By 95, it's a Lacey and Hakkinen.

And they're both super quick, but they're a bit wild.

And Hakkinen probably is doing as many daft things as a Lacey at that point.

And it's where the graph goes next that goes totally different.

I'm a bit sympathetic with Flavio here because I don't see where else he goes at this point, given who's available and who's going to work.

They have kids hanging around like Giancarlo Fisichella who's not ready.

I think Benetton had the F3000 champion, Vincenzo Sospiri, who's not going to be an option for that seat at that point.

David Coulthard is not a bad option for that seat as an Alessi partner potentially, but he's locked down to McLaren well in advance going to 96%.

And then where else, you know, you look at what Benetton's done for his second car for a few years.

It's been a variety of old people.
