You can't make this driver in this team, this combination of drivers, into a championship calibre together.

You've gone wrong.

You went wrong for the right reasons, but you've gone wrong.

So now what the hell do you do?

I sympathise with all of that, and I think it's inevitable.

I think as well, Benetton had grown into a title-winning team for the first time, and in the circumstance of its titles, 94 was so fraught, so many suspicions, so much drama.

95, less controversial, but still having to relentlessly beat a slightly faster car all the time through the season.

The focus on the collisions as well.

There's a weight through both.

Those are not smooth seasons.

It's not like a dominant Williams reeling off titles.

It's Benton having to scrap and scrap and scrap.

And then when you've gone through that process and then you suddenly realise, oh, a lot of this was so dependent on this driver who we liked and it worked.

And now we're in this situation where we could work just as hard as we did for those previous two years and it will not pay off.

Whatever we do, we are not going to get these results.

a degree of fracture and exhaustion is going to come in for the drivers as well.

Benetton couldn't go into 96 saying, this will be a transition season publicly, because then it just goes, we haven't managed to replace our outgoing superstar with a driver who's that good, so we're going to have to figure out how to do this with someone who's not that good.

It had to build this as a continuity project where Lacey could plug in and do what Schumacher did, whether it believed it or not.

And I think it genuinely believed it, and with good reason given what he'd done up to then.
