said that the agreement the ceasefire agreement signed on october the 10th last year was the most significant agreement signed in 3 000 years of middle east history so i think everything has to be taken with a pinch of salt i mean he has definitely or there have definitely been fairly granular negotiations between um the is not the israelis but between hamas egyptians
Turkey and the United States with the Israelis keeping a close eye on things about how this disarmament process that had been agreed on in principle last year should proceed.
But what worries me is that we haven't heard from the Israelis since the announcement.
In fact, if anything, Israeli government officials poured cold water
on it behind closed doors yesterday.
We haven't heard from Hamas.
There are contingencies in this disarmament plan which have yet to materialize.
One of them is the withdrawal of Israeli troops.
I mean, Hamas is not just going to hand over its stash of weapons to the IDF and then say, okay, we'll now deal with childcare or education.
that's not going to happen so there are lots of things that have to take place that for which there is no precise timeline yet and remember we are about to enter after the summer break into a very heated israeli election campaign for their election on the 27th of october the whole country has shifted mood-wise to the right since october the 7th and therefore i think it'd be quite difficult
for Netanyahu to sell this plan to an Israeli public when he's desperately trying to get re-elected.
I think what may be different, and I don't know this for certain, but I'm guessing, is that they have had certain reassurances.

It may be the presence of peacekeepers.
I mean, the Turks were involved in these talks as well, and the Egyptians.
Maybe they have offered a certain number of people, troops that can safeguard this very fragile peace.
Remember also Israel, of course, has continued with airstrikes since October the 10th last year and has killed more than a thousand Palestinians, many of them children since then.
They have broken the ceasefire on a number of occasions.
But I think the key thing with all these things, and you know this from Ireland, I mean, it took a very long time for the IRA to give up its weapons in Northern Ireland.
This situation here is far more fraught
