It was our job on the leave side to actually show the business community divided were divided, which they were.

So those two protests at the CBI conference were not protesting against the Prime Minister who was speaking.

They're protesting against the CPI trying to represent.

Uh the actual email on that is on the Robert Peston uh business in the book.

And uh it wasn't to any reported by Robert Peston, it was over to the debates and basically who's gonna be on the debates.

And we felt as a campaign we had the right to nominate people as the official campaign, the official leave campaign, the right to nominate people for debates, and that was up for discussion at the time.

So in a sense that was forcing the issue to make

But it wasn't about reporting.

I think it's um an ambiguous word.

I think one big picture point.

Um, you talk almost as if the um referendum campaign unleashed all of these sort of demons, as your book's called, um, on the British public and British politics.

I would actually say that Britain's relationship with the EU has always had its difficulties.

And it really went back to um, in a sense, the Master Treaty, really then.

When it was an economic bloc, I think most Brits were sort of fairly happy with the UK being part of the EU.

Once it became more and more political in different ways and that sense of control was being lost to European institutions, that's when the British Republic became more unhappy.

And there was always that pressure for a referendum that was building up with the Euro debate and um, you know, the Lisbon Treaty and the Nice Treaty and all these other treaties going on.

So really it was a long term
