And then he gradually worked his way up.
He showed that nobody ever thought that he was the second coming of Laurence Olivier or any of these other great actors.
But he was a guy who was sober, diligent, hardworking, showed up.
knew his lines, hit his marks, did what the director asked.
And so, you know, he started getting bigger and bigger pictures, including, you know, one of his favorites, Newt Rock, the All-American, where he played this very idealized version of George Gipp, the Notre Dame football star, who seemed like in the movie, like an All-American guy.
Of course, in real life, he was this degenerate gambler, draft dodger, all sorts of other things.
But
They presented a very idealized version.
And he became, you know, in the future known as the Gipper because he played George Gip.
And then, you know, he made quality pictures like the melodrama King's Row and some others.
And so by the time, you know, World War II rolled around in 1941, Reagan was receiving equal billing with Errol Flynn.
He was actually, you know, one of the bigger stars that Warner Brothers had.
So in the future, I would add,
You could insult Ronald Reagan 10 ways to Sunday, and he wouldn't care, but he did not like to have his movie acting chops questioned.
He did not like to be described as a B-movie actor because, in fact, he was not just a B-movie actor.
He graduated to the A pictures.
He was a pretty reasonably sized star in pre-war Hollywood.
Well, that was actually kind of one of the fun parts of researching this book, watching almost all of Reagan's movies.
And he made a lot of them, over 55 or something like that.
I mean, I think the reality with Reagan is he was a decent actor, but he wasn't the great actor that he thought he was.
