Um, and I thought that limiting it to one person who just truly doesn't know what the hell is going on would really lend to

this sense of disorientation and claustrophobia that is so necessary for this kind of a thing.

And you know, these trials, whether or not these characters survive them, really are about coming to terms with who you are um in your heart of hearts, for better or worse, um, completely owning who you are, what you are, and what you choose to be.

Um, and so that needed to be led for me by someone who was actively figuring it out under pressure.

Um, I went into it knowing fully what her damage is.

Um, and, you know, what she would be shown and tasked with by the Leviathan.

Um, it was a challenge to strike a good balance between

Um, yes, this is how she is as a person, and yes, this also needs to be an active protagonist that's doing things to move the plot forward.

A lot of what made this easier than it maybe should have been is a lot of her

Issues uh come from exposure to narcissistic people.

And when I was writing this novel, I had just started in therapy to deal with my own issues with narcissistic people.

Um and

So truly the first draft of this book was never meant to see the light of day.

I just wrote it all just came out of me in a month and it felt

ugly and bad, but therapeutic, um, because I had hated it at first.

I hated Caro.

I thought this is the dumbest character that has ever existed.

And she sucks.
