Joe Biden just very casually as he was walking outside the White House chatting to reporters said, yes, I think it's a genocide.
They say what's happening to the Uyghurs in China, in Xinjiang, is a genocide.
It's funny that we don't have the same contortions, the same controversies, the same arguments over those labels, even though Israel has killed proportionately far more children, for example, in Gaza than Russia has in Ukraine.
There's always a risk with emotive language, with controversial terms when we're talking about controversial issues, especially faraway conflicts of which we know little.
But I would say three quick things.
Number one, it's our job, Don, as journalists.
We're not politicians.
It's our job to say what we believe is the truth, what we believe there's factual evidence for.
It's not our job to carry public opinion.
That's the job of a politician.
I say things which are true, regardless of whether they're popular or unpopular.
Number two, actually, if you look at the polling done, a remarkable number of people, millions of Americans, tens of millions, believe there is a genocide going on in
Gaza.
One poll suggested 50 percent, certainly of the Democratic base, Biden's base, a big chunk believe it is a genocide.
And that's despite all the pro-Israel media coverage.
Imagine if they actually were seeing what's happening in Gaza.
Imagine if we had reporters on the ground at mass graves.
Imagine what those polling numbers would look like then.
And last but not least, number three, let's ask ourselves why we're able to not flinch when we hear the genocide word used in Ukraine.
But in Gaza, we do.
